TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Bonnie Glaser, managing director of the German Marshall Fund's Indo-Pacific Program, discussed her long-standing involvement with Taiwan issues and key aspects of the island's security landscape in an exclusive interview with TVBS commentator Wenchi Yu.

Glaser, who first arrived in Taiwan in 1979 after the United States severed diplomatic ties, highlighted her return in 1996 during heightened cross-strait tensions, coinciding with Taiwan's presidential election.

The recent surge in international media coverage of Taiwan's elections was attributed to Taiwan's democratic significance, its role in semiconductor supply chains, and escalating cross-strait tensions, including the risk of military conflict.

Despite international interest, Glaser expressed concerns about insufficient attention to civilian-military relations, emphasizing the need for integration between military advancements and NGO-led initiatives.

The discussion also addressed China's multifaceted threats, including cyber disinformation and psychological warfare. Glaser advocated for a broader perspective on Taiwan's security, emphasizing the United States' commitment to Taiwan's security.

Regarding U.S.-Taiwan relations, Glaser anticipates Washington's efforts to preserve the cross-strait status quo and encourage dialogue between Beijing and Taipei, highlighting the strengthening of bilateral economic ties between the U.S. and Taiwan.

The interview offers insights into Taiwan's evolving security landscape and its complex relationships with global players.
