TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's pivotal presidential and legislative elections have marked a significant victory for the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), leading to heightened discussions on the island's future and its international relations, particularly with China and the United States.

Election Outcomes and Global Attention

The 2024 elections, another landmark in Taiwan's democratic journey, attracted attention from over 150 media outlets across more than 30 countries, underlining the global interest in Taiwan's political developments. These elections saw Lai Ching-te, a staunch advocate for Taiwan's independence and democratic values, rise to power, causing ripples in the region's political landscape.

Experts and analysts, who engaged with the media on Sunday, noted that despite the candidates' efforts to present a balanced approach to the sensitive cross-strait relations, the election results leaned toward maintaining the current dynamics rather than shifting closer to China. This outcome reflects the Taiwanese public's preference for preserving their democratic identity over closer ties with Beijing.

Rising Tensions and International Reactions

Amid mounting concerns in China, predictions suggest an increase in the DPP's influence in Taiwan's governance over the next few years. Potential repercussions could include escalated tariffs, sanctions, economic pressure, and intensified military posturing under Lai's leadership. However, experts agree that a full-scale war remains unlikely due to the absence of immediate strategic threats and China's growing internal challenges.

In response to these developments, Washington has displayed a mixed reaction. While reaffirming the “One China Policy,” it has also shown support for Taiwan's democratic process. Analysts predict that arms sales to Taiwan from the U.S. will likely continue, indicating an ongoing partnership between Washington and Taipei. They also emphasized that Taiwan will likely continue to bolster its national defense capabilities without rolling back its efforts.

Future Steps and Preparing for Change

As the president and vice president-elect begin thanking supporters, they are also preparing for their next steps to mitigate tensions in the Taiwan Strait. They have reassured Washington that Taiwan will not be a disturbing factor in the upcoming U.S. presidential elections. With about four months until they officially take office, the Taiwan leader-elects will consult with experts from Washington and China before unveiling their policy agenda on inauguration day.
