TAIPEI (TVBS News) — In late 2023, a dedicated group of Taiwan People's Party (TPP) supporters embarked on a unique mission from Taipei to Hengchun.
Their symbol: a 7-kilogram, 270-centimeter tall balloon fashioned after their presidential candidate, Ko Wen-je.
This endeavor, initiated by an enthusiastic supporter YouTuber "Yes Ranger," is focused on expanding Ko's popularity, particularly among the older electorate, in the lead-up to the elections on January 13.
"I believe young people should contribute first," he said.
"They should sacrifice, work hard, and chant slogans. Whenever we go south, we pass many elders. We always greet them kindly, recognize their hard work, and offer them encouragement."
While Ko enjoys significant backing from the 20 to 39 age group, garnering support from older voters has been a hurdle.
To bridge this gap, initiatives are being rolled out to motivate the younger generation to engage their grandparents in supporting Ko.
Professor Chu Chao-hsiang from National Taiwan Normal University's Department of East Asian Studies pointed out, "the grandchildren will discuss with their family, parents, and especially grandparents, encouraging them to support Ko Wen-je."
"Due to their devotion and love, most grandparents will listen to their grandchildren to some extent.”
Known for their adept use of social media to captivate young voters, Ko’s campaign team is now returning to grassroots campaigning.
They're highlighting issues like Taiwan's economic challenges and the growing disparity between rich and poor, directly challenging the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the Kuomintang (KMT) to capture a broader audience.
As January 13 approaches, the TPP is redoubling its efforts on every campaign front, aiming for a decisive victory.
