TAIPEI (TVBS News) — As the 2024 presidential election approaches in Taiwan, the Kuomintang (KMT) party is intensifying its efforts with a unique "group" strategy in the final stage of the campaign, uniting prominent figures to back their candidate, Hou Yu-ih. This approach marks a departure from past internal conflicts, aiming to consolidate support across various local factions.

Former President Ma Ying-jeou, KMT Chairman Eric Chu, Vice Presidential candidate Jaw Shaw-kong, former Kaohsiung Mayor Han Kuo-yu, and former Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng have all joined forces in support of Hou. This election is particularly significant for the KMT, with Hou, a less conventional candidate compared to the politically elite Ma Ying-jeou and Eric Chu, at the forefront.

Media expert Chiu Ming-yu commented on the strategy: “Introducing figures like Jaw Shaw-kong or Han Kuo-yu at this juncture could help address the issue of losing deep Blue votes within the Kuomintang.”

However, Hou faces challenges, particularly in charisma, when compared to his counterparts. Chiu added, “Compared to Ma Ying-jeou or Eric Chu, who were articulate, not to mention Han Kuo-yu with exceptional oratory skills, Hou Yu-ih seems to be falling short in his expressions.”

Philip Yang, a Political Science Professor at National Taiwan University, highlighted the need to focus more on Hou’s personal image to build trust and support, emphasizing the importance of portraying his character as trustworthy.

As the election draws near, the three major parties are employing diverse strategies in their final push, with the outcomes to be revealed on Jan. 13.
