NEW TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The New Taipei City Education Department and Police Department confirmed on Wednesday (Dec. 27) a single fatality in a recent junior high school incident.
The student passed away on Tuesday (Dec. 26) after being stabbed in the throat by a classmate the previous day. The clarification follows a social media screengrab suggesting a second student was injured.
In response to media inquiries, New Taipei authorities said they are addressing this tragic incident with a multi-faceted approach: targeting inappropriate behavior, holding cross-bureau meetings for student support, and increasing school security patrols.
From January to November, more than 340,000 students received counseling, primarily for self-exploration, gender issues, family challenges, and emotional and self-harm concerns, according to tallies.
Despite these measures, some teachers remain concerned about security loopholes, as searching students' bags for prohibited items is considered impractical in Taiwan.
