TAIPEI (TVBS News) — With Taiwan's election a month away, Lev Nachman, assistant professor at National Chengchi University (NCCU), and Samson Ellis, Bloomberg Taipei bureau chief, analyzed the nation's political scene at the "Taiwan Goes to the Polls" event on Wednesday (Dec. 13).
Recent polls show narrowing support between the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and Kuomintang (KMT), with the Taiwan People Party (TPP) experiencing a slight drop. Nachman observed, "We have dogmatically worshiped the polls in a way that I have not seen in the past."
"There is no perfect poll. There is no magic formula," he added.
Nachman emphasized the need for voters to review various polls from different sources before drawing conclusions.
Ellis highlighted younger voters as "the largest group of attractable voters," noting their undecided status and forming political identities. He suggested policies appealing to young people could also attract their parents.
Taiwan's election is drawing global attention due to the island's strategic importance. Nachman noted all three candidates are portraying themselves as successors to Tsai Ing-wen by maintaining the status quo.
Ellis concluded, "This election looks like it has come down to a referendum on where voters see Taiwan's long-term future."
