TAIPEI (TVBS News) — In the race for Taiwan's presidency, Taiwan People's Party(TPP) candidate Ko Wen-je stood out Tuesday (Dec. 5), claiming among the three contenders he was the least politically burdened, with no constraints from the "1992 Consensus."
Ko echoed President Tsai Ing-wen's stance on peaceful solutions, aligning with her sentiment, "War is not an option, Taiwanese people should choose dignity in peace," which he shared on Facebook last night.
Yet, Ko emphasized the need for an "implied guarantee" to secure genuine deterrence. In this vein, recalling the October visit by the American Institute in Taiwan Chair Laura Rosenberger, Ko highlighted her comments on the U.S. position of not supporting Taiwan's independence but encouraging dialogue.
This, Ko analyzed, represents an implied guarantee to China by the U.S., aiming to prevent accidental escalation.
Reiterating his commitment, Ko stressed that if elected, he would ensure Taiwanese society and both the U.S. and China understood that his administration would neither veer toward independence nor accept forceful unification.
