TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Kuomintang (KMT) presidential candidate Hou Yu-ih on Tuesday (Nov. 21) told Taiwan People's Party (TPP) presidential candidate Ko Wen-je his willingness to renegotiate survey results that could decide the final joint ticket despite possibly losing out in the conclusions.
"If I lose, I will be the vice presidential candidate, no problem," Hou said, with the registration deadline for the presidential race just three days away, on Nov. 24.
In a press conference, Hou reached out to Ko directly, suggesting a 2-on-2 discussion format that would also involve KMT Chairman Eric Chu and former President Ma Ying-jeou, each appointing a representative to debate the nine survey results initially discussed on Nov 15.
Hou's gesture came after Ko reportedly phoned him at noon, proposing whether the blue and white camps should reconvene talks. Hou emphasized the urgency of reaching an agreement without issuing a request should Ko decline the final consensus.
Demonstrating his commitment to unifying opposition forces and success in the upcoming elections, Hou affirmed he is ready to accept the role of a vice-presidential candidate regardless of the survey outcomes.
Also, Hou announced his openness to broadcast the negotiation process live, ensuring transparency for skeptical onlookers.
This move indicates a significant effort by Hou to consolidate support against the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) as the pivotal election draws near.
