TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of Education (MOE) announced on Monday (Nov. 7) that students living in both public and private university dormitories will be eligible for a subsidy starting in February next year.
The subsidy program is expected to benefit around 260,000 students with the sponsor of the Ministry of the Interior (MOI), which has secured an estimated budget of NT$27.5 billion from housing funds.
The subsidies range from NT$1,200 to NT$1,500 a month and will be available to all students, regardless of their financial background. In addition, students from low or mid-low-income families will be eligible for an additional subsidy that is 1.4 times the original amount.
Wang Han-yang, president of a civil group that has been monitoring Taiwan's education system, praised the launch of the dorm subsidy program as a heartwarming move by the government to help ease pressures many people have been facing amid severe global inflation.
Student group EdYouth also welcomed the subsidy, indicating that it will reduce the need for economically stressed students to take out loans.
