HSINCHU (TVBS News) — Taoyuan residents from Longtan gathered outside the Hsinchu Science Park Administration building on Thursday (Oct. 19), demanding an update on the currently stalled expansion project.
Earlier this week, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) pulled out of plans to build a fabrication plant in Longtan, citing intense public backlash.
Despite TSMC's withdrawal, Longtan residents remain concerned that the science park will still seize land for other purposes.
A representative from a local self-help group said the administration is not only taking their land but also uprooting their community and destroying their hometown.
The group emphasized that their grievance is not with TSMC but rather with the potential devastation of their neighborhood.
While the expansion plans appear to be at a standstill, the administration is reportedly reassessing the situation and cautiously considering its next steps.
