KAOHSIUNG  (TVBS News) — Taiwan celebrated a historic moment on Thursday (Sept. 28) with the official launch of its first domestically manufactured submarine, the Hai Kun. This development marks a significant national defense milestone for the country and is expected to bolster its capabilities in asymmetric warfare.

The submarine's name, Hai Kun, symbolizes mystery and elusiveness, hinting at its role in safeguarding Taiwan's national interests. The project was collaborative, with the CSBC Corporation proudly announcing that 40% of the submarine's components were locally produced.

Seven years in the making, the Hai Kun represents Taiwan's dedication to self-reliant national defense. This achievement showcases the country's technological prowess and its commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty in the face of evolving security challenges, according to President Tsai Ing-wen.

Reporting from the launch event, TVBS Reporter Tingting Liu noted the significance of this momentous occasion, highlighting that the submarine's entry into service, expected in April, would undoubtedly enhance Taiwan's capabilities in asymmetric warfare.
