TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The New Taipei City Government recognized 74 athletes, coaches, and teams for their exceptional contributions to sports in 2023 during a ceremony on Thursday (Sept. 7). Mayor Hou Yu-ih was present to commend the attendees, expressing admiration for their unyielding spirit.
Among the honored was gymnast Chuang Chia-lung, who broke records at the National Middle School Athlete Games by taking home seven gold medals.
Taekwondo player Kuo Yen-Yu also received accolades not only for her gold medal in the mixed doubles category at the National University and College Athlete Games but also for her competition at the World University Games.
Another athlete who received an award was sixteen-year-old Chen Po-yen, Taiwan's rising star in para table tennis. He is currently ranked fourth in Asia and tenth globally and earned his ticket to compete in the 2024 Paris Paralympics.
The New Taipei City Sports Merit Award gave 61 individual prizes and 13 team awards, including recognition of outstanding coaches, athletes, and merit organizations.
