CHENGDU, China (TVBS News) — Taiwanese wushu athlete Sun Chia-hung secured Taiwan's first gold medal in the men's tai chi at the 31st FISU World University Games in Chengdu, China, on Sunday (July 30).
In an impeccable display of skill, Sun attained an impressive 9.693 points, emerging as the highest scorer in the men's tai chi event. He narrowly edged out his formidable competitor from Singapore by a minuscule margin of 0.017 points, securing the coveted gold medal.
This victory followed closely after Sun's silver medal triumph in the men's tai chi sword, where he was narrowly defeated by Hong Kong's Hui by a mere 0.016 points.
The Taiwanese wushu team has been in the limelight at the Chengdu 2023 FISU, amassing a commendable tally of two bronze, one silver, and one gold medal thus far. Sun's prowess has shone through, contributing two medals to Taiwan's growing acclaim on the international martial arts stage.
Impressive performances extended beyond wushu, with Judoka Yang Yung-wei securing a silver medal on Saturday in the men's under-60-kilogram category.
Taiwanese archers have also made a mark with three medals, including a silver in the men's team recurve and two bronze medals in the compound women's team and compound mixed team events.
As of Monday, Taiwan's medal count has reached an impressive 11 across various sports, including wushu, archery, taekwondo, judo, and shooting.
With the competition set to conclude on Aug. 8, Taiwan's athletes are unwavering in their determination to achieve further success, aiming to elevate Taiwan's standing on the international stage.
