TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taipei Zoo spokesperson Tsao Hsien-shau confirmed on Wednesday (July 19) that Moke, a popular Malayan Tapir, passed away on July 18. The cause of death is still pending investigation, and the National Taiwan University's veterinarians will conduct the pathological autopsy, Tsao added.
In the afternoon of July 19, the zoo issued a press release stating that Moke appeared lethargic and experienced diarrhea starting from July 15.
In response to the suspicion of Moke dying of heat-related injuries, Tsao stated that the regular checkups of Moke showed no signs of abnormality. Before July 15, Moke also stayed at the exact location with his mate, Molly, where they could enjoy shades and the pond. On the evening of July 15, the Zookeeper discovered that Moke was lethargic but regained strength after bathing in water.
For safety reasons, Taipei Zoo then placed Moke in the backfield to closely monitor his condition since July 16, and he spent most of the time in shades. On July 17, Moke exhibited symptoms of diarrhea, prompting veterinarians to administer prophylactic antibiotics.
A large ice cube was also placed in his habitat to regulate the temperature. Following these measures, Moke's condition showed signs of improvement. However, on July 18 morning, Moke had no strength standing. Although veterinarians continued to provide treatment, Moke lost his heartbeat at approximately 3:30 in the afternoon.
Born in 2015 in the Prague Zoo, Moke came to Taiwan in 2018 and captivated the hearts of many with his cute personality. Moke's two offspring, Mofang and Mohuadou, were born in 2020 and 2021, respectively.
In commemoration of Moke, who instilled vitality into the Malayan Tapir family in Taiwan, a memorial service will be held to honor his memory and bid him farewell.
