NANTOU (TVBS News) — As temperatures rise in Taiwan, Puli Township in Nantou County faces a distressing summer with the local landfill's 9,000-ton trash mound emitting strong odors.
The absence of incinerators in Nantou has forced the 13 townships to rely on other counties for waste disposal. However, neighboring counties claim that their outdated equipment can only handle a limited amount of garbage.
Consequently, the daily transportation of 200 tons of trash for incineration elsewhere has yet to impact Puli's ever-expanding landfill.
In response, the Nantou Environmental Protection Bureau commissioner, Li Yi-shu, announced that officials are actively seeking alternative solutions to address the problem.
"We plan to dispose of the approximately 7,000 tons of waste at the site through project-based external transportation, aiming to resolve the issue in Puli," said Li.
The waste generated far exceeds this amount despite daily transporting 50 tons of trash to incinerators. Puli Township's mayor has urged the public to reduce waste and incorporate reusable shopping bags and food wares into their daily lives to combat this.
