TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — The National Communications Commission (NCC) approved on Wednesday for Mirror News to expand its coverage on 32 cable TV systems (Mirror TV), with unanimous agreement among the committee members. The decision followed the NCC's review of the channel's change in leadership and its application to join cable TV lineups.
The committee, led by NCC Chairman Chen Yaw-shyang, approved the channel's inclusion on cable systems operated by Homeplus, Kbro, Taiwan Fixed Network and more. The NCC also confirmed the chairman, Cheng You, and general manager, Tsai Chang-po, of Mirror News Channel.
The NCC's scrutiny of the matter aimed to ensure proper oversight and management of media entities. During the review process, critics raised concerns regarding the financial stability of Mirror News Channel. However, NCC secretary general Huang Wen-she explained that the committee members expressed interest in the channel's financial situation.
Mirror News Channel acknowledged the necessity of being included in cable lineups to ensure normal operations, addressing concerns about its financial stability. The committee acknowledged the feasibility of Mirror News Channel's operational plan.
The NCC, having requested additional explanations from the channel and sought assistance from relevant authorities to investigate the concerns raised, presented its findings in a special report to the Legislative Yuan.
Four of six committee members agreed to approve the application following deliberations. According to the administrative procedure law, the NCC required Mirror News Channel to submit a written undertaking within one month for the decision to take effect.
The NCC's decision marks a significant step in the regulatory process, allowing Mirror News Channel to expand its reach and engage a wider audience across cable TV systems in Taiwan before the elections.
