TAICHUNG (TVBS News) — Taiwan Premier Chen Chien-jen informed the media on Monday, June 19, that the government has "obtained relevant details" about the visit of U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to China. He made this statement during a groundbreaking ceremony at the Wuqi Fisherman's Wharf in Taichung.
When asked by the media whether Taiwan would be affected by Blinken's visit to China, Chen remarked that the government has closely monitored interactions between high-level officials from the U.S. and China. He said, "We have obtained relevant details about this interaction between high-level officials from the U.S. and China."
Chen also mentioned that Taiwan and the U.S. have maintained smooth communication. However, due to the established practice, mutual trust, and tacit understanding between the two sides, he could not disclose the specific details to the public.
Blinken arrived in Beijing on Sunday, June 18, and met with China's Foreign Minister, Qin Gang. Despite their nearly 6-hour conversation, no progress was made on cross-strait issues.
Blinken's visit to Beijing marks the first time in five years that a U.S. Secretary of State has traveled there. The initial visit, scheduled for February, was postponed due to the U.S. detecting and shooting down a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon.
