TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Healthcare workers at National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH) are facing temporary restrictions on overseas travel from May to July, according to an internal message from the hospital's president. The restrictions allegedly apply to those who plan to go abroad for a holiday, except for official business needs.

In response to media reports, the Taipei Doctors Union criticized the hospital on Tuesday for disregarding employee vacation rights and demanded that the hospital president lift the alleged ban on overseas travel.

The union's criticism reflects the importance of protecting workers' rights, including their right to rest and vacation. After working tirelessly during the pandemic, healthcare workers deserve a break and the opportunity to recharge, the union said.

Some health workers, however, argued that the hospital's decision to restrict travel during evaluation periods might be well-intentioned in ensuring enough staff to manage hospital operations.

The hospital claimed that balancing hospital needs and workers' rights is essential to ensure a happy and healthy workforce for quality patient care.

The union added that the hospital should consider alternatives to ensure that staff can take leave while meeting operational requirements.

It is worth noting that the pandemic has placed unprecedented stress on healthcare workers worldwide. Many have been working long hours and facing high-stress levels and burnout, which can impact patient care.
