TAIPEI (TVBS NEWS)  — Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport will begin collecting layover fees from international travelers starting March 31, according to an announcement by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications on Tuesday (March 14).

The NT$500 airport service fee will be included in the airplane ticket fare, with the exemption of honored guests, their families, and infants under two years old.

This marks Taoyuan Airport's first collection of airport service fees since its operations in 1979.

According to Han Chen-hua, deputy director of the Department of Navigation and Aviation, airports in South Korea, Japan, and Singapore have collected layover fees from passengers.

The revenue generated by the airport service fee will be used for airport construction, according to Han.

The international airport connects to 63 destinations worldwide, with approximately 1,400 flights each week, about 60 percent of pre-pandemic levels.

The number of tourists this year is expected to exceed 20 million. If transit numbers reach 2.96 million, as they did pre-pandemic, the airport service fee could generate around NT$550 million a year in revenue.
