TAIPEI (TVBS NEWS) — Taiwanese baseball sensation, Yu Chang, has become a rising star after his standout performance for the Chinese Taipei national baseball team at the 2023 World Baseball Classic (WBC).
Despite failing to advance to the quarter-finals, Chang was named the WBC Pool A's Most Valuable Player on Sunday (March 12).
Chang's fame has skyrocketed with seven hits, including a two-run homer against Italy and a grand slam against the Netherlands.
Fans have fallen in love with his signature "military salute."
However, just two months ago, he was criticized for prioritizing MLB's spring training over representing the national team.
Taiwanese top athletes are exempt from serving part of their military service but must compete for the national team within five years.
Nonetheless, Chang's decision to come back and play for his country has won back the Taiwanese people's hearts.
