KEELUNG (TVBS News) — This group of sixth-grade elementary school students is from Keelung. The children listen carefully to instructions before heading to the beach for their clean-up mission around Heping Island.
"We are actually very close to the ocean. I don't want the children to think, they just go to the beach for fun, and that's it," said Gu Cheng-hui, a teacher at Du Nan Elementary School in Keelung.
"I hope that the children can understand that there are actually many layers to nature, which are being destroyed, but sometimes, instead of using slideshows and videos to teach them this, it is better to bring them on the spot and show them the actual situation," she added.
Keelung Heping Island is affected by the northeast monsoon, which results in marine debris piling up. The plastic bottles and fishing nets are not only from Taiwan, but also from different parts of the world.
Lee Shen-chieh, brand manager of Friendly Seed said: "When cleaning the beaches, we found that most of the garbage came from the garbage produced in our daily life, so marine debris is actually very closely related to our life. We hope that through beach cleaning, everyone can reflect on what kind of relationship we have with the marine debris."
This group of teachers and students was able to collect 31.5kg worth of waste during the clean-up.
