TAIPEI (TVBS News) － Large amounts of driftwood, grass, plastic wastes and trash have piled up on a beach in northern Taiwan amid the recent heavy rainfalls, according to government officials.
This beach in Ilan County is a hotspot for fishermen to catch baby eels. However, the beach is filled with debris which not only cut fishing nets open but also crush the caught baby eels.
Some fishermen have lashed the Ilan County Government for not keeping the beach clean. Officials said there is more waste than usual and they will clean the beach up as fast as they can.
The eel fishing season spans from November to February in Taiwan. One baby eel can sell for up to USD$ 3.4 (NTD$110). That's the reason many fishermen bear the harsh waters and low temperatures, in the hope of catching some eels.
