TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen named Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company founder Morris Chang as Taiwan's representative to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit on Thursday (Oct. 20).
The event, which will unfold in November in Bangkok, Thailand, will be an important opportunity for Taiwan to convey its position on regional economic structures, sustainable development, and semiconductor production.
"We wish to let other countries better recognize Taiwan's role in the global industry supply chain," Tsai said at the press event on Thursday. "We are also willing to work with our regional partners together to build a secure, reliable and resilient industry of supply chains," she added.
This will be the sixth time the TSMC founder represents Taiwan at the summit, though it's only the second time he will be attending in person. President Tsai expressed hope that Chang would emphasize Taiwan's semiconductors and the country's role in the global supply chain this year, while the 91-year-old assured the nation that he would seize the opportunity for communication with other countries.
The summit is set to take place on November 18, and according to Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, though the U.S. has confirmed that Vice President Kamala Harris will be in attendance, there have been no concrete answers from China nor Russia about their leaders' eventual participation.
