SINGAPORE (TVBS News) - The U.K. Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly, spoke about the direction of U.K.-China relations on Thursday (Sept. 29) at the Asia summit held in Singapore.

“When China departs from global rules and norms when it aligns itself with aggressive countries like Russia, it's standing in the world suffers. The U.K. government will always stand up for our sovereignty, economic security, and that of our partners,” said James Cleverly, the Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom.

Three weeks into his new role, Cleverly made his first official visit to the Indo-Pacific region, where he announced the United Kingdom’s planned “tilt” toward the region, expressing aims to further cooperate on economic issues, security matters, and shared values, with the Indo-Pacific.

“I am here to make it clear that the Indo-Pacific tilt is here to stay. It is permanent,” said James Cleverly, the Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom.

The U.K. has its eyes set on being the first European country to join the CPTPP. While Cleverly said that the U.K. will commit itself more fully to the Indo-Pacific region, he did not mention anything regarding Taiwan at the Asia summit.
