TAIPEI (TVBS) — Former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo shared his insight into Taiwan's post-pandemic economic developments in Kaohsiung City on Tuesday (Sept. 27), highlighting the global economic and trade trends, as well as new opportunities for Taiwan businesses.

Speaking at the the Global Taiwan Business Forum, he greeted Vice President Lai Ching-te with a friendly elbow bump. Lai also extended a warm greeting to the former U.S. official, and emphasized Taiwan's gratitude toward Pompeo's gesture of support for the country.

Although the visit this time is mainly focused on economic discussions and business talks, Pompeo took the time to reiterate his support for Taiwan regarding its sensitive political stance. "It is that Taiwan does not need to declare its independence because it is already an independent nation," Pompeo remarked.

Pompeo's 3-day trip this week marks his second visit to Taiwan this year following his previous meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen in early March. The former U.S. secretary visited the Pier 2 Art Center later today, and meet with Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai in the evening. He will also head to Tainan to give an opening address at the annual meeting of the World Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce on Sept. 28.
