TAIPEI (TVBS News) — On the 23rd anniversary of the 921 Earthquake in Taiwan, schools conducted earthquake drills to reassess their preparedness in case of emergency. On National Disaster Prevention Day, schools put on emergency drill videos to show children what to do in case of an earthquake.
Since the 921 Earthquake more than 20 years ago, Taiwan has updated its emergency protocols. Today, the Central Weather Bureau's earthquake evacuation guide instructs the public to turn off stoves and head to open spaces when an earthquake strikes.
For those indoors, the guide advises keeping close to or getting under short, firm structures within the house to protect oneself.
Central Weather Bureau Seismological Center supervisor Liao Che-wei explained, "After a strong earthquake, we know that aftershocks are usually accompanied after."
"There are usually several successive aftershocks after the first wave of shaking," he said, adding "it is recommended to carry out evacuation procedures like heading to more open spaces when the shaking becomes more moderate."
Drawing on the harsh lessons provided after the 921 Earthquake, central and local governments in Taiwan have invested in creating comprehensive disaster prevention procedures and efficient follow-up SOPs.
