Wei rules out full TSMC move to US (Courtesy of TSMC)
TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Amid rising geopolitical tensions, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (台積電, TSMC) Chairman C.C. Wei (魏哲家) addressed concerns about the potential relocation of production lines to the United States in the event of a cross-strait conflict on Tuesday (June 4).
Wei emphasized the impracticality of moving all production out of Taiwan, highlighting the broader implications of such geopolitical issues on the global tech industry.
The remarks came ahead of the 2024 COMPUTEX, where President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) declared ambitions to transform Taiwan into an artificial intelligence hub.
The event, which saw participation from tech leaders like TSMC's Wei, NVIDIA's CEO Jensen Huang (黃仁勳), and AMD's CEO Lisa Su (蘇姿丰), became a platform for discussions on geopolitics and its impact on the tech industry.
During TSMC's shareholder meeting, which took place simultaneously with the tech show, Wei expressed a desire to avoid war. He hoped for wisdom from world and cross-strait leaders to prevent conflict, stressing that not only the semiconductor industry but all sectors would suffer in the event of a cross-strait confrontation.
