TAIPEI (TVBS News) — New Taipei City Mayor Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜) voiced his support on Wednesday (May 29) for the legislative reforms, emphasizing the positive impact such reforms could have on societal progress.
Speaking after a city council meeting, Hou highlighted the importance of bipartisan unity in facing these changes, reflecting the people's high expectations.
Hou's remarks come in the wake of the third reading of the Law Governing the Legislature's Power. This development has broadened the Legislature's authority and prompted the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to request a constitutional interpretation. Hou stated that the new Legislature carries the people's expectations, and new public opinion must acknowledge the significant responsibility that comes with these reforms.
The expansion of legislative powers has sparked public protests, underscoring Taiwan's diverse society where expressing opinions is a valued right. Hou noted that these voices are heard, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging different perspectives in a democratic society.
Amid speculation about his potential candidacy in the 2025 party chairmanship election, Hou reiterated his commitment to prioritizing the governance of New Taipei City, signaling his focus remains on local administration over political ambitions.
