TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Premier Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁) on Monday (May 13) called for unity across political parties and local government leaders to celebrate the presidential inauguration, marking a significant national event. He emphasized the inauguration as a symbol of Taiwan's freedom and democracy, urging participation from all sectors to uphold the nation's democratic traditions.

Chen highlighted the importance of the upcoming presidential inauguration of President-elect Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on May 20 as a celebration of Taiwan's democratic values. Despite the Kuomintang legislative caucus's decision to abstain from the event, Chen's message underscores the significance of collective participation in such national ceremonies. He reiterated the Presidential Office's invitation, encouraging a show of solidarity to reflect Taiwan's commitment to democracy and freedom.

Among the leaders of Taiwan's six major cities, only Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) and Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) have confirmed their attendance at Lai's inauguration. Deputy Legislative Speaker Johnny Chiang (江啟臣) will also be present. This selective attendance highlights the political nuances within Taiwan's local and national leadership dynamics.

As the inauguration approaches, Chen's appeal for widespread participation serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to foster and celebrate Taiwan's democratic heritage.
