Aftershocks decrease daily following Hualien M7.2 quake (TVBS News)
HUALIEN (TVBS News) — A magnitude 7.2 earthquake that struck Hualien on April 3 has been followed by 739 aftershocks, according to statistics from the Central Weather Administration (CWA) as of 8:03 a.m. on Monday (April 8).
The CWA reported two aftershocks with a magnitude of 6 or above, 25 between magnitudes 5 and 6, 222 between magnitudes 4 and 5, and 490 between magnitudes 3 and 4. The number of aftershocks has been decreasing daily, with counts of 314, 167, 111, 89, and 58, respectively.
The April 3 earthquake had a depth of 15.5 kilometers, and its epicenter was located at 25.0 kilometers south-southeast of the Hualien County Hall. The quake had a maximum intensity of 6 in Hualien County.
In the aftermath of the quake, two buildings in the city area were found to be leaning, and 17 buildings were identified as dangerous. Multiple bridges have developed cracks, and several walls have collapsed.
