TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Former Kaohsiung Mayor Han Kuo-yu of the Kuomintang (KMT) was elected as Taiwan's new legislative speaker on Thursday (Feb. 1).
The vote at the Legislative Yuan required two rounds. In the first, no nominee from the KMT, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), or Taiwan People's Party (TPP) reached the necessary 57 votes, prompting a second round.
You Si-kun of the DPP and Huang Shan-shan of the TPP were also in the race.
Ultimately, Han won with 54 votes, surpassing You's 51. Following the election, You, who was serving as a legislator-at-large and the previous Legislative Speaker, resigned from his legislative position.
On the same day, the deputy speaker was elected, with KMT's Johnny Chiang winning the role. The KMT's victory in these elections signals a significant shift in Taiwan's political landscape.
