KMT head demands party unity ahead of speaker vote (TVBS News)
TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The chairman of the Kuomintang (KMT) stressed on Wednesday (Jan. 31) the importance of unity within the party, cautioning against dissent in the upcoming speaker and vice speaker elections. Eric Chu advocated for transparent elections involving all parties, including the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the Taiwan People's Party (TPP).
The remarks were made a day before the inauguration of Taiwan's 11th Legislative Yuan, an event that has already heightened political tensions.
Chu condemned any deceptive strategies by the DPP, deeming them harmful to the integrity of Taiwanese politics. He emphasized the need for KMT legislators to strictly adhere to party lines and voiced his hope for a strong representation of each party's influence in the speaker election.
Furthermore, Chu underscored the urgency of remaining watchful of the ruling party and the necessity of ending prior political elitism. He outlined the KMT's commitment to advocate for parliamentary reforms and to introduce major bills during the first session.
Chu is optimistic that cooperation between opposition forces and progressive DPP legislators will establish a reinvigorated democratic spirit in Taiwan.
