TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Legislative Yuan passed amendments to the Controlling Guns, Ammunition and Knives Act on Monday (Dec. 18), as individuals firing standard-issue firearms in or towards public spaces will now face at least seven years in prison, and could be fined up to NT$15 million.

Aiming to introduce tougher penalties for gunfire offenses in public areas, the amended legislation also mandates stiffer penalties for discharging non-standard firearms in public venues, with sentences ranging from five to twelve years and fines of up to NT$10 million.

In a move to thwart offenders who might exploit loopholes by surrendering immediately after committing a crime, the new provisions adjust the terms for those confessing or turning themselves in.

Where the law previously allowed a reduction or exemption of punishment, it will now only permit the possibility of such leniency, leaving the ultimate decision to the discretion of the judges, based on the specifics of each case.

Interior Minister Lin Yu-chang highlighted the urgency for the amendments, citing recent incidents where modified firearms have led to high-profile casualties.

The revisions aim at cracking down on gun-related crimes and are intended to strengthen overall social safety and order, Lin noted.
