TAIPEI (TVBS News) — In Taiwan, Dec. 25 is known not only as Christmas but also as Constitution Day, a holiday that Kuomintang (KMT) presidential candidate Hou Yu-ih has pledged to reinstate if elected.

Speaking to the media, Hou stressed that the Constitution embodies the essence of the Republic of China (ROC), underpins the rule of law, and safeguards people's rights. He argued that without the Constitution, the ROC would lose its fundamental spirit.

Against this backdrop, Hou criticized his rival, Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) Lai Ching-te, for suggesting that the ROC constitution impedes Taiwan's unity, calling it a myth. He also took aim at Lai's running mate, Hsiao Bi-khim, who has publicly distanced herself from the ROC.

Hou accused Lai of cutting seven public holidays, including Constitution Day, and attempting to erase the nation's founding spirit and the rule of law. He emphasized his commitment to restoring Constitution Day as a public holiday to preserve the country's founding spirit and protect workers' rights.
