TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The campaign office of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Lai Ching-te unveiled a campaign video titled "Taiwan in the world" on Tuesday (Dec. 12), underscoring Taiwan's reduced reliance on China and its growing global standing.
Against this backdrop, Pan Men-an, head of the DPP's campaign headquarters, expressed concern about efforts by opposition parties to isolate Taiwan and stressed the importance of the 2024 election in determining Taiwan's future relationship with the world and China.
The video highlights Taiwan's democratic values and its engagement with the international community, emphasizing the pursuit of a value-based diplomacy to strengthen global ties.
Lai's campaign office spokesperson, Tai Wei-shan, pointed out that Taiwan's trade dependence on China, which peaked at 40 percent during former President Ma Ying-jeou's presidency, has now decreased to 34 percent.
According to an August report by The Economist, Taiwan has risen to become the 21st largest global economy under President Tsai Ing-wen's seven-year tenure, with a per capita GDP surpassing that of South Korea.
Lai's campaign office emphasizes the pivotal role of the 2024 election in shaping Taiwan's future and calls on the public to make an informed choice.
