NDC Minister eyes swift ECA with Australia for energy ties (TVBS News)
TAIPEI (TVBS News) — National Development Council(NDC) Minister Kung Ming-hsin voiced anticipation in a speech on Thursday (Dec. 7) for Taiwan to rapidly sign an Economic Cooperation Agreement(ECA) with Australia.
He highlighted the significant potential for collaboration in the hydrogen energy sector to bolster industrial development between the two nations. Serving on behalf of Taiwan's government, Kung accepted the official release of the 2023 White Paper, issued by the Australia New Zealand Chamber of Commerce (ANZCHAM).
Kung noted that trade among Taiwan, New Zealand, and Australia soared to a record high of US$34.08 billion last year.
Thus, he pointed out Australia's critical role as a major supplier of energy and agricultural products for Taiwan, emphasizing the high degree of complementarity in their economic industries.
Talking about Taiwan's efforts in energy transition, Kung stated the nation is actively involved in offshore wind financing operations with the Macquarie Group, with over 280 wind turbines currently operational.
Taiwan has set a target for 10% of its energy mix to come from hydrogen, specifically green hydrogen, illustrating the substantial room for energy cooperation with New Zealand and Australia.
