BCC says news coverage unbiased, despite KMT ties (TVBS News)

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Broadcasting Corporation of China (BCC) assured the National Communications Commission (NCC) on Wednesday (Dec. 6) that its news coverage remains unaffected by upper management, emphasizing that their chairman and general manager, Jaw Shaw-kong, who is also the Kuomintang (KMT) vice-presidential candidate, has taken a leave of absence.

This response follows the NCC's concern, raised on Nov. 29, about potential media bias given Jaw's dual role at the broadcasting organization. The NCC stated that Chen Sheng-i has taken over Jaw's duties, and Jaw insisted in an interview on the same day that he would make the wisest decision, refusing to resign as he maintains no laws have been breached.

Jaw is not the only one under scrutiny. Hsu Jui-hsi, nominated by the Taiwan People's Party (TPP) as a legislator-at-large candidate, faced similar challenges over her positions on the boards of Public Television Service (PTS) and Chinese Television System (CTS).

NCC has instructed BCC, PTS, and CTS to adhere to regulations related to the "Public Officials Election and Recall Act" and the "Radio and Television Act," ensuring objectivity and fairness in election reporting. After Hsu announced her resignation from both boards on Dec. 1, both PTS and CTS replied to NCC promising to abide by legal standards and to guarantee impartial election coverage.

The commission plans to review responses from the three companies and present its findings soon.
