Taiwan braces for northeast monsoon; heavy rain forecasted (TVBS News)
TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Residents across Taiwan are bracing for a sharp change in weather as the Central Weather Administration (CWA) forecasts significant effects from the northeast monsoon from Friday (Nov. 24) to Saturday. The northern region, especially Yilan, is expected to experience heavy rainfall as the monsoon takes hold.
Starting Friday, the previously fair weather conditions will give way to the strengthening northeast monsoon. Coastal areas from the north to the northeast, including regions north of Miaoli to Yilan, will face strong gusts reaching Level 5-7 on the Beaufort scale.
High-velocity winds between Level 8-10 on the Beaufort scale are also anticipated in regions south of Taoyuan, including Taitung, the Hengchun Peninsula, along the Pingtung coast, and outlying islands. Residents in these areas are advised to prepare for potentially dangerous weather conditions.
Temperature-wise, the daytime highs in the north and northeast will dip to about 20-22 degrees Celsius, with a slight increase to 21-23 degrees expected for Saturday.
By Sunday, the northeast monsoon is predicted to weaken, shifting to an easterly direction. Eastern Taiwan can still expect sporadic brief showers, though rainfall is likely to decrease, while the western half of the island sees more sunny to cloudy skies.
However, the relief may be short-lived as another surge in the northeast monsoon is on the horizon.
The weather system is slated to intensify again by Monday evening, potentially impacting the region until Wednesday. Observers are on the lookout to see if this monsoon will bring low temperatures associated with a continental cold air mass.
During periods of a stronger northeast monsoon, pollutants from outside Taiwan's borders can affect air quality across the island, potentially causing adverse conditions for sensitive groups. Individuals with respiratory concerns should take extra precautions during this time.
