Hou Yu-ih rallies party for 2024 election win (TVBS News)
TAIPEI (TVBS News) — In a late-night announcement Thursday (Nov. 23), Kuomintang (KMT) presidential candidate Hou Yu-ih said that the KMT, encompassing 15 mayors and magistrates, all legislators, councilors, and village chiefs, is gathering the strongest team to secure victory in the 2024 elections.
Hou's rallying call aimed to reassure voters that the KMT is dedicated to steering the nation back to stability and prosperity amid concerns over national security and public demands for change.
The KMT's unity bid follows an unproductive meeting between Hou; independent candidate Terry Gou, founder of Foxconn; and Taiwan People's Party (TPP) presidential candidate Ko Wen-je. The three contenders gathered to discuss potential opposition consolidation but failed to reach any agreement.
KMT chairman Eric Chu accompanied the party's at-large legislative candidates to the Central Election Commission for registration Wednesday in a show of support as the KMT gears up for the upcoming electoral battle.
Former Kaohsiung mayor Han Kuo-yu expressed concern over Taiwan's mounting troubles in both domestic and foreign affairs through social media usage the day prior. He urged the government, irrespective of which party is in power, to unite with citizens in holding the authorities accountable.
Han laid out expectations for KMT at-large legislators. He called for a commitment to considering the nation's needs, discerning the right direction for the country, listening to the people's grievances, and vocally articulating the public's suffering. Han stressed that legislators should not remain silent but actively question policies and serve with sincerity.
Han appealed to all citizens to grant the KMT a chance, highlighting that the at-large legislative candidates come from diverse professional backgrounds with various expertise. Han promised vigorous efforts to purge Taiwanese politics of corruption and to pursue peace and prosperity for the island.
