MOTC: No decision timetable on motorcycles on highways (Shutterestock)
TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Minister of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) Wang Kwo-tsai said on Monday (Nov. 13) that there is no set timetable for deciding whether to allow Taiwan's heavy motorcycles on highways, citing the ongoing lack of consensus on the issue.
A local motorcycle organization, advocating for the right of heavy motorcycles to access highways, is planning a protest. They aim to encircle the MOTC building on Nov. 26, expecting over 5,000 heavy motorcycles and tens of thousands of people to participate.
Discussing the possibility of heavy motorcycles using highways, Minister Wang said in an interview that despite extensive discussions and communication with local governments, the prevailing opinion is that the current conditions are not conducive for such a change.
He expressed concern that the behavior of heavy motorcycle riders on highways could lead to significant disturbances. Moreover, a recent poll suggests that around 60% of the population opposes allowing heavy motorcycles on highways. Wang reiterated the lack of consensus and confirmed that there is no timeline for resolving this contentious issue.
