TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Premier Chen Chien-jen reiterated on Tuesday (Oct. 31) that Taiwan is a nation grounded in freedom, democracy, and law, where citizens complying with legal regulations can run for public office.
Chen's remarks came after inquiries regarding the debate about the Taiwan People's Party (TPP), which is considering nominating Xu Chunying, a mainland spouse and the president of Taiwan New Immigrant Development Association, to compete in at-large legislative elections.
Before attending an interpellation session earlier that day, Chen stated that any political party can nominate suitable persons for government positions.
However, Chen urged political parties to clarify the background and propositions of their nominated candidates, empowering the public to make informed choices.
In line with protecting Taiwan's sovereignty, Chen emphasized that individuals pushed forth by any political party should maintain the sovereignty of the Republic of China, Taiwan and respect the nation's autonomous development.
