TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA) issued a land warning on Tuesday (Oct. 3) as Typhoon Koinu gathers strength. This follows a preceding sea warning, signaling impending severe weather conditions.

Currently categorized as a moderate typhoon, Koinu's position was approximately 460 kilometers east-southeast of Cape Eluanbi earlier that day, tracking west-northwest at a rate of 11 kilometers per hour, as reported by the CWA.

CWA Meteorologist Wu Wan-hua anticipates that Koinu will have its most significant impact on Taiwan from Wednesday through Friday.

Preparations for Koinu's approach include forecasts of heavy rainfall and rising swells in Taiwan's eastern region, including the Hengchun Peninsula, slated for later Tuesday. The initial warning areas include Hualien, Taitung, Pingtung, and the Henchun Peninsula.

The effects of Typhoon Koinu will likely begin affecting the sea off the island's southeastern coast on Tuesday evening, followed by the southeastern portion of the island early Wednesday morning, Wu explained.

In light of the impending storm, authorities have called for public vigilance and advised residents to stay updated on the latest developments concerning the typhoon. Eastern coastal areas are expected to witness swells exceeding 4 meters later on Tuesday.
