Taiwan prioritizes elderly for Moderna XBB.1.5 vaccines (TVBS News)

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan began prioritizing people aged 65 and over to receive the Moderna XBB.1.5 vaccine on Tuesday (Sept. 26).

This initiative, aimed at reducing severe COVID-19 symptoms and mortality rates, followed a surge in Influenza A cases since September.

Patients who receive the vaccine will also get 10 rapid test kits and NT$500 convenience store vouchers.

All these efforts come amid a growing number of patients at large hospitals' emergency and outpatient departments, witnessing a 30% increase compared to last year.

Given the severity of the flu epidemic already, we fear the autumn and winter peak season could worsen the situation further, said an unidentified doctor.

Shih Sheng-huan, a local clinic doctor, recommends individuals feeling excessively tired or worn out by the flu promptly take antiviral medication, helping to avert severe illness.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare suggested that the elderly receive COVID-19 and influenza vaccines in September and October. Subsequently, pneumococcal vaccinations will be available from Nov. 27, enhancing overall protection.
