TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Qualcomm, a prominent semiconductor manufacturer, reportedly initiated a company-wide layoff on Thursday (Sept. 21). The research and development center in Shanghai experienced a 20% staff reduction, while the Taiwan branch saw a 10% cutback.
Several Chinese media outlets reported that full-time employees in Shanghai will receive a severance package of "N+4," equivalent to the number of years worked plus four months' salary. Contract employees can expect a maximum of "N+7," which allows for seven months of wages on top of years of service.
In contrast to Shanghai, Taiwan's branch offers a slightly lesser severance plan, "N+3," as pointed out by online users familiar with the matter.
In related news, the alleged Qualcomm layoffs will primarily impact the wireless networking (WiFi) and software departments. The involvement of the research and design department remains to be determined, while other departments and centers will witness an average staff reduction of about 20%.
