TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Independent presidential candidate Terry Gou officially launched signature collection stations across Taiwan on Wednesday (Sept. 20). The tech tycoon, joined by his running mate, actress Tammy Lai, visited a station in Banqiao District to show support and foster morale.
Speaking to the media, he shared that he is moved by the number of supporters who showed up. "It is a bit beyond our imagination, "Gou said.
Gou, the founder of Foxconn, stated that he is running for the 2024 presidential election to unite the non-Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)camps. He emphasized that the public is the true reflection of public opinion; therefore, he vows to respect the popular will by dedicating his efforts to collecting signatures.
Still, to qualify for the ballot, Gou must collect at least 289,667 signatures by Nov. 2.
Gou's venture into politics brings fresh dynamics into the political landscape of Taiwan. His campaign is seen as an attempt to upend Taiwan's traditional DPP-KMT political divide, rallying those disillusioned by the current status quo.
