GREATER TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) issued a heavy rain advisory for Chiayi City, Chiayi County, Tainan City, Kaohsiung City, and Pingtung County on Friday (Aug. 11). The turbulent weather across Taiwan has been attributed to the influence of southwestern winds since Thursday.

Localized heavy rains drenched the southern region of Chiayi on Thursday morning, resulting in flooding in Kaohsiung, Tainan, and Pingtung. By afternoon, intense thunderstorms wreaked havoc in the north. The worst rainfall unfolded in Greater Taipei and Taoyuan, leading to widespread flooding and the suspension of two-way traffic between Taoyuan and Yingge.

The significant influence of the southwestern airflow brought by the low-pressure system continues. While there's a slight reduction in moisture, overall rainfall remains relatively high. During the early morning and around midday today, convective activity is set to intensify along the coastal plains of the southern regions, warranting the use of rain gear.

In terms of temperatures, highs are projected to range between 30 to 34 degrees Celsius. The CWB has released a heat advisory for Hualien County and Taitung County, as Eastern Taiwan could encounter temperatures of up to 36 degrees Celsius for three consecutive days. Precautions against sun exposure, such as sunscreen and staying well-hydrated, are strongly advised.

Over the weekend, the southwestern winds will likely weaken, reducing rainfall across various areas. Brief, localized showers are anticipated in the early morning in the central and southern parts. The weather will predominantly be cloudy, with isolated short thunderstorms likely in the afternoon throughout the country.
