DPP criticizes Hou Yu-ih’s nuclear restart proposal (TVBS News)
TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Hou You-yi announced his energy policies on Tuesday (Aug. 9), expressing his desire to restart two decommissioned nuclear power plants, extend the lifespan of the single remaining operational plant, and review the decision to discontinue the construction of the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant if he wins the election.
Chen Shih-kai, spokesperson for Democratic Progressive Party presidential hopeful Lai Ching-te, criticized Hou's plans as revealing his unfamiliarity with national policies. Chen noted that Hou reversed his stance on decommissioning the first and second plants, betraying the expectations of New Taipei City residents.
Chen slammed Hou for being unfit to govern and irresponsible. He pointed out that the first and second nuclear power plants had reached their operational limits and were being decommissioned. Chen also highlighted that Hou had yet to offer a solution to the problem of nuclear waste disposal.
Chen challenged whether Hou had gained consent from more than seven million residents of New Taipei City for his proposition. He accused Hou of potentially betraying his constituents for votes.
Chang Chih-hao, spokesperson for the Democratic Progressive Party, condemned Hou for endangering over seven million residents of New Taipei City by ignoring the nuclear waste issue. Chang called Hou an 'ardent nuclear advocate,' going against the public consensus against restarting the fourth nuclear plant.
