TOKYO (TVBS News) — Kuomintang presidential candidate Hou Yu-ih clarified his party's alleged "pro-Chinese" stance after Japanese media referred to it as such on Tuesday (August 1).

"I am against 'pro-independence' and 'one country, two systems,'" Hou said.

However, he emphasized his support for the "1992 consensus," which conforms with the constitution of the Republic of China (R.O.C., Taiwan).

The consensus refers to a tacit understanding between the K.M.T. and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) that sees both acknowledge there is "one China," but with each maintaining their own interpretation of "China."

Hou referred to himself as a "through-and-through" Taiwanese, adding that he remains dedicated to defending the nation.

The presidential hopeful acknowledged that Japanese media are very concerned about rising cross-strait tensions, explaining that he hopes that conflicts can be prevented through practical communications.

During Hou's three-day visit to Japan, he will visit members of the parliament and meet the people of Japan, expressing Taiwan's determination to maintain peace and stability across the strait.
