Mayors urge caution, declare Typhoon Day in southern Taiwan (TVBS News)
TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Typhoon Doksuri has intensified in southern Taiwan, prompting Tainan and Kaohsiung mayors to declare a typhoon day. Despite controversy over the necessity of the decision, Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che defended his decision based on the storm's unpredictable nature.
The decision was taken based on the Central Weather Bureau's forecast, which shows the potential for worsening conditions. Meteorological expert Peng Qi-ming has voiced concern about public underestimation of the typhoon, reminding of its slow-moving nature and possible intensity escalation from the afternoon into the night.
While morning conditions were relatively calm, the impending typhoon brought unpredictability that demanded preparedness. Peng has urged public awareness and caution, focusing on vulnerable structures and large advertising signs that could pose safety risks.
Notwithstanding the initial lighter wind and rain, Huang Wei-che and Chen Chi-mai are taking precautionary measures due to the typhoon's unpredictable progression. Early preparation and diligent adherence to safety advisories are urged amongst the public.
