TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan passport holders can enjoy visa-free access to 144 countries and territories worldwide, securing the 31st position in the latest Henley Passport Index released on Tuesday, in a tie with Panama and Macau.

The index, published by the London-based consulting firm Henley & Partners, shows that Taiwan's passport has climbed four places from its previous ranking of 35th in January 2023. A total of 65 countries have passports with more visa-free access than Taiwan.

According to the index, Singapore claims the top spot with visa-free access to 192 nations. Germany, Italy, and Spain share the second position, with their passports granting access to 190 destinations. Japan dropped two spots to third place after holding the first position for five consecutive years, allowing its passport holders to travel to 189 countries without a visa.

Austria, Finland, France, Luxembourg, South Korea, and Sweden are joining Japan in third place. Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom secure the fourth position, with access to 188 destinations. Belgium, the Czech Republic, Malta, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, and Switzerland share the fifth spot.

On the other hand, China ranks 63rd, with visa-free access to 80 countries, while Afghanistan occupies the bottom spot on the index, with a meager 27 destinations offering visa-free travel to its passport holders.

The Henley Passport Index compares the visa-free access of 199 different passports to 227 travel destinations, relying on exclusive and official data from the International Air Transport Association to ensure accuracy and reliability.
